 BBS Wheel Stamp Meanings

Japanese Alloy Wheel Standards

1. BBS - Genuine BBS Wheel, manufactured by the BBS factory, not a reproduction or copy.

2. ET38 - Offset of the wheel, expressed in mm, in this case positive 38. Offset is the distance from the centre point of the wheel, to the hub mounting point, which can be either positive or negative.

3. RM004 - BBS Part Number, in this case an RM design wheel, fourth in design/production. Each specific number carrys a specific diameter, offset, width and fitment.

4. JWL - This is a safety standard mark, which has many different variations, which in turn hold different meanings. JWL (Japan Light Wheel Alloy) is a compilation of standards defined by the Japanese Government to ensure the vehicle's safety for aluminum road wheels. Every wheel put to market in Japan must be tested before release to meet JWL standards.

Japan Light Alloy Wheel (JWL) is the technical standard for Light Alloy Disc Wheels for Passenger Car approved by Ministry of Transport (MOT).

These standards are generally accepted worldwide as acceptable for most road conditions. That is why you will see these marks on European and other Asian country wheels.

4.1. JAWA - Japan Light Alloy Wheel Association (JAWA), while maintaining close contact with their member companies, JAWA carries out research and technical studies concerning the manufacture, marketing and distribution of automotive light alloy wheels. These activities also include market and technical research aimed at developing new demand for industry products plus many other related activities. To achieve these objectives, Japan Light Alloy Wheel Association aims to improve quality of Automobile Light Alloy Wheel and promotes liability of their product in the automotive after market.

To establish the order of wheel design in our industry, JAWA promotes Voluntary Wheel Design Protection Registration System. JAWA is also lending its support to the efforts to find solutions to material recycling system.

4.2. VIA - Vehicle Inspection Association Registration System (VIA). VIA marking can only be engraved on the wheel if registered by Japan Light Alloy Automotive Wheel Testing Council after strict quality tests by the authorized testing facility on the adaptability of JWL or JWL-T technical standard.

4.3. JWL-T - Japan Light Alloy Wheel Truck & Bus (JWL-T). The technical standard for Light Alloy Disc Wheels for Truck and Bus approved by Ministry of Transport (MOT).

5. 6J x 15H2 - This stamp is the size of the wheel, dependent on the BBS part number. In this instance 6J stands for the width of the wheel in inches (6"), with 15H2 the diameter of the wheel also in inches (15").

6. GERMANY - This stamp shows the country that the wheel was manufactured in, in most cases it will say Germany. But some wheels were manufactured in some other European countries, for example Italy.

7. KBA41620 - KBA is short for Kraftfahrzeugbundesamt. Every wheel/tyre combination has to be approved by this car authority (Kraftfahrzeugbundesamt aka KBA). Every component of relevance has to have been checked with this department, with tests regarding rigidity, maximum load etc, all of the results are then filed with the KBA. Aftermarket part suppliers would get a KBA number after their wheels had passed these tests.

8. 1J0 601 025 AM - This is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part number. This number is dictated by the car manufacturer, to enable replacement wheels to be purchased from the manufacturer dealership. These numbers can vary massively depending on the company/year/car etc. In this example the part number is a for Volkswagen, and for BBS RC336 wheel.

BBS Wheel Colour Codes

The following letter codes indicate the finish options available for a particular wheel.

C - Brilliant chrome plated finish.

DBK - Diamond black paint, clear lacquer protective coat.

DBPK - Diamond black center, polished rim, clear lacquer protective coat.

DSK - Brilliant silver painted, clear lacquer protective coat.

DSPK - Brilliant silver center, polished rim, clear lacquer protective coat.

GK - Gold, clear lacquer protective coat.

GPK - Gold center, polished rim, clear lacquer protective coat.

PLA - Plasma paint (vacuum metallized [chrome look] finish with clear coat.)

POK - Complete wheel in ball polish finish, clear lacquer protective coat.

SK - Silver, clear lacquer protective coat.

SPK - Silver center, polished rim, clear lacquer protective coat.

SRK - Sport silver metallic, clear lacquer protective coat.

BBS AI AIR I

The BBS AIR I AI is a one-piece cast alloy wheel using "Air-Inside" Technology, featuring hollow spokes and rim flanges. The AI wheel also has weight optimized by FEM analysis.

The BBS RM is a cast 2-piece wheel. The two pieces consist of the outer lip or rim and the inside half, being held together with 30 bolts. The centre cap is plastic and snaps into place. These wheels were available on the Volkswagen Golf GTIs. The wheels them self are notoriously soft, and were very expensive from the dealer if they need replacing after being damaged.

The RS wheel is the BBS classic in road wheels. It was the first 3-piece wheel on the market and was introduced in 1983. The RS wheel was produced up until 1995. The wheel centre is made out of forged aluminium and is finished in brilliant silver or gold. There are many variations available from 15 to 18 inch, most of them secured with 34 bolts.

The 3-piece wheel consists of an outer rim and an inner barrel plus the center section. The center cap is aluminum and threaded, and attaches by screwing on to the wheel. These are very light (around 15 pounds each [6.8kg]), very strong and very rare wheels, especially in the U.S. where they were never offered on any factory Volkswagens. The RS's were offered on a few European VWs, and they are very sought after nowadays.

In 1995, the BBS RS wheel was followed by the 2-piece RS II wheel. It had a new polished stainless steel protector. The RS II wheel was fixed with only 16 titanium bolts, with filler being integrated in one of the bolts. The wheel centre was made of heat-treated counter pressure casting and finished in sport silver. The rim was produced by a rolled process. For pressure control an adapter has to be used. The RS II wheel was available up until 2002.
