New-to-me 1992 400E with RennTech 6.0


Hello everyone,

I started a post yesterday requesting some help on my recent purchase and was getting a number of PMs asking for more details about the car. So thought I’d just start another post with what I know.

I just purchased a white 1992 400e that has a RennTech 6.0 L engine. Some of you seem to know of the car and were not aware it was for sale. The car was not listed anywhere…it was sitting in his front yard on a busy road near my house. He was clearing out his inventory of project cars due to issues with not driving them frequently. It currently has 153k miles and I am now the 3rd owner from what I can tell. 

The first owner had the RennTech engine installed shortly after purchasing the car new. It looks like the shop sourced the parts from RennTech and assembled the engine themselves. Upgraded cams were included but not sure which ones. There were a number of services records for a leaking left valve cover gasket around the 2005 time frame. Eventually, the shop detected a crack in the cylinder head and used epoxy to fix. The car then seems to have changed hands to the owner I purchased it from at about 132k miles. 

This second owner owns a performance shop in Roswell, GA and this was a project car for him. He says the engine was rebuilt due to the issue the prior owner experienced. I’m not sure which previous owner carried out these modifications but here is what I’ve found so far:
Euro glass headlamps with HID bulbs (not bi-Xenon so only low beams)
Clear corners (front turn signals)
AMG Monoblock 2 wheels
Lowered suspension, believe it was Eibach springs, Eibach rear dampers, Mercedes front dampers
Rolled front fenders
3 inch exhaust, Magnaflow cat, Borla muffler
Quaife LSD
Cross-drilled rotors front and rear, but not sure of brand
Since this is a 1992 model, it has the passenger airbag and no glove box, but has a lockable cubby under the center armrest
Headliner was replaced

I’ve had the car for a few weeks now and have started a list of “issues” I’ll try to tackle…with all of your help by the way. The one I posted on yesterday was issues I’m having with the valve cover leaking again.

I don’t have a lot of pictures but will share the few I do have. If there is something you want to see, let me know and I’ll try to get a picture taken and posted.
